The 3 Year Old Meltdown

Whoever coined the phrase "terrible two's" was a sissy... or they didn't make to it the 3's.

Amelia has been 3 for 1 week and 1 day.  I'm not sure I'm going to make it the entire year.  Perhaps if I get a glass of wine for every whiny meltdown she has.  I love Amelia more than I thought I could ever love someone, but my goodness!  She has started this new thing where she will lay down on the floor on her belly screaming (not crying, screaming) kicking and hitting the floor.  This would be perfectly fine if we were at home, but nooooo, she does this places like Chick-fil-a.

Yesterday we were at our most favorite christian chicken for playgroup.  It was time to go so I warned the families sitting near the playground, took a deep breath and headed in the door.  I came out with a diaper bag and purse on my shoulder, a 7 month old on my hip and a limp 3 year old hanging by 1 arm.  Even though I knew I had her where I knew I would not break her arm off, it was still a long way to the door.  I dropped her (gently went to the ground), sat on the floor with her and tried to regroup.  It didn't work.  Shortly after we were offered a balloon.  At this point rewarding for poor behavior was an option.  With everyone looking on got our balloon and left.  We talked on the way home that the rest of our group was headed for ice cream and we were going home to nap.

This morning she decided she didn't want to go to school (because she did not go to sleep until after 10 last night) and she threw a fit in the middle of the floor at preschool.  COME ON!  We went in the bathroom and had to make a decision of whether we wanted to walk nicely into our classroom or get a spanking.  She decide, begrudgingly, to go to school.

What in the world is going on? Is this normal behavior or has she seen someone do it?  Why does she do in it public and never at home.  How do I handle this behavior?

I think they are just becoming aware of their emotions and their personalities are so big.  And maybe they just don't know what do to with them? And those emotions are definitely being worn on her sleeves.  She will breakdown at a moments notice. Lord help us!
